The 5 Best Places to Cry

I buy a lot of tissue.  And I don’t mind. I make it fun - all the boxes have a theme and the tissue is soft so your nose won’t be red when you leave.  Tissue is a tough sell to clients at first.  Though once they see how great the tissue is… they’re sold.

As great as a cry can be, most of us try to avoid it.  When I ask clients why that is, they tell me they don’t have a good place to cry.  Worse, crying is seen as a sign of weakness - so even less people are engaging in this truly healing process.

The University of Minnesota proposed crying releases a stress hormone that helps when our emotions become too high.  Specifically: adrenocorticotropic hormone.  (Say that three times fast.)  Which would explain the relief we usually feel after a good cry.

Here are 5 great places to cry – and the bonus - all of them also offer a sensory connection that will help facilitate the process:

1.  The Shower
There is something inherently calming about water and it has the added bonus of washing the tears right off your face.  Great for long cries.  Beware of potential echo.

2.  The Car
Having trouble crying?  Put on a couple sappy songs, and take a long drive.  It’s even more helpful when it’s raining as no one can see you well.

3.  Movies
This is ideal for the deep silent cry.  You can come in late, sit in the back and bring the tissue.

4.  Hike/Run/Walk
Exercising can trigger an out pour of emotions and if you choose a somewhat isolated location, this can be a real feel good experience.  Plan to be extra tired after this cry!

5.  Friend’s House
If you are cool with crying around another person, dear friend or family member, by all means, please do it.  Having support when you are sad is fantastic.

I’m really not suggesting we find reasons to cry, I’m certain there are enough.  I am just hoping that people can find a safe place to experience a real emotional need.
